The Fine Arts Club at IU South Bend has created a 14 foot tall paper mache giving tree for a food drive Thursday.

The tree is made up of mostly outdated suggestion slips donated by Martin’s Supermarkets.

Since February, when Martin’s approached them with the idea, 12 members of the club put about 120 hours into the tree. It took 60 gallons of wheat paste, all those suggestion slips, and a bit of newspaper to build the structure.

Indiana distributed $300,000 to food banks across the state. The funding was was set aside in the new, two-year state budget passed earlier this year.

The money is distributed through the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, ISDA. In a statement, ISDA Director Bruce Kettler said, “I commend the organizations, farmers and countless others who are on the front lines, working tirelessly to end hunger in the state."

The funds could help organizations purchase and distribute fresh, healthy food options to people in their areas.
