Amazon Planning Delivery Station In Northeastern Indiana

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — An Amazon delivery station is planned to help speed up deliveries to customers in northeastern Indiana’s Allen County. WANE-TV reports Thursday that Amazon Logistics said in a news release that the facility is expected to create hundreds of full-time and part-time jobs when it opens this year. A location was not given. Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry says the delivery station also will bring revenue and growth to the community. The delivery station also will offer entrepreneurs the opportunity to build their own businesses delivering Amazon packages.

Downtown Fort Wayne Protest Turns Ugly Late Friday Evening

What began as a peaceful protest early Friday evening on Fort Wayne’s Courthouse Green turned into tear gas and riot gear by 8 p.m.

Organized by Alisha Rauch to protest the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota on Memorial Day by police officers, the protest started around 5 p.m. with a few hundred gathering along both sides of Clinton Street.

More than 200 General Motors temporary workers were let go over the weekend at the Fort Wayne Assembly plant.

Under the terms of the latest contract, GM recently converted more than 900 temporary workers to full-time status in plants around the U.S., including about 150 workers at the Fort Wayne Assembly location.

Officials with GM and United Automobile Workers local 2209 say they were unable to come to an agreement to hire the laid-off temporary workers. A GM spokesperson said in a statement they were willing to hire the group part-time.

United Automobile Workers ratified a new four year contract with General Motors Friday afternoon. Indiana local chapters were split on approving the contract but workers are heading back to work.

Those outside GM Fort Wayne Assembly plant Friday afternoon began cleaning up the picket line as word came down that the contract had been ratified. Some signed each other’s’ picket signs and took photos to commemorate the moment.

Other Unions Join UAW Strike Outside GM Facilities

Unions across the state are showing solidarity with the United Automobile Workers, joining the picket lines in support, as the strike against General Motors goes into its second week.

Leslie Lizarraga is a teacher in Fort Wayne. She held a UAW sign outside the Fort Wayne Assembly plant Saturday. She says the teachers union came out to show its support for increased wages, an issue Indiana teachers are also pushing for in their profession.

“We all have to be solid together in order to support all of us, not one of us, as a group,” says Leslie Lizarraga.

The United Automobile Workers strike against General Motors is forcing some Indiana companies that supply parts to the car maker to shut down. 

The union picketing entered its third day Wednesday after the UAW called for the strike against GM at midnight Sunday night. Thousands of workers in Indiana have since walked off the job.

No Swingers Clubs For Allen County, Indiana

Commissioners in northeastern Indiana's Allen County have voted to implement rules that would prohibit swingers clubs and other businesses involving live sex acts.

The regulations also would require licenses for new sexually-oriented businesses.

The new regulations would allow commissioners to oversee the time, manner and place that sexually-oriented businesses could operate in the county.

General Motors officials announced Thursday they plan to invest about $24 million into the company’s Fort Wayne assembly plant. The facility is benefitting from the company’s push to make and sell more trucks, while other locations across North America have been shut down.

Fort Wayne Zoo Says Elderly Amur Leopard Died Of Cancer

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo says an elderly Amur leopard has died from cancer.

It said Tuesday the cat named Ussuri died April 23 at the age of 18. He outlived the median life expectancy of the leopards by a few months.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Officials say two sea lion sisters have died after 17 years at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo.

Grits died March 30 while under veterinary care and after a period of declining health. Fishbone died Wednesday while undergoing a medical procedure.

Zoo Executive Director Jim Anderson says in a statement posted on the facility's Facebook page that officials and animal care professionals "share this heartbreak."

The animals were born in 2001 at Florida's SeaWorld Orlando and came to Fort Wayne the following year.

Elkhart and St. Joseph County Planned Parenthood facilities may see an increase in patients from Northeast Indiana after the Fort Wayne office closed its doors yesterday, amid allegations of harassment from pro-life groups in the area.

 

A notice on the main entrance of the Fort Wayne Planned Parenthood office, set to be vacant on July 31st, directs visitors to Elkhart and Mishawaka facilities.
