Hotel Trump Opened In Indiana In 1998 Is Shut Down

GARY, Ind. (AP) — A 300-room hotel built opened by Donald Trump's casino company in 1998 to help draw gamblers to a northwestern Indiana casino has been shut down.

The June 30 closure came as the current owner of the Majestic Star Casino in Gary is working to move it from along Lake Michigan to a location along the busy Interstate 80-94 in the city.

Spectacle Entertainment vice president Jahnae Erpenbach says that the hotel had declining occupancy and making needed renovations didn't make sense with the upcoming casino move.

GARY, Ind. (AP) — Authorities in northwest Indiana say two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old who was attempting to sell an Xbox.

Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez says a 17-year-old and 18-year-old were taken into custody Wednesday.

Gary officials previously said Johnny Peluyera of Merrillville was shot June 12 after he and his father arranged to sell the gaming console to someone who had connected them online.

GARY, Ind. (AP) — A state senator from northwestern Indiana is becoming the first Democrat to take formal steps toward running for governor in next year's election.

Sen. Eddie Melton of Gary is announcing the formation of a gubernatorial exploratory committee during a Tuesday evening event in Gary.

The session’s gaming bill passed the House Monday. But many supporters say they want a number of changes to the final version of the bill.

House Amends Gaming Bill, Seeks Transparency

After substantial changes were made to this session’s gaming bill, an amendment was added Thursday to increase transparency. It was in response to a report that Gov. Eric Holcomb had met privately with the Gary casino’s CEO.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indiana House panel is set to take up a bill that would allow one of Gary's casinos to move to Terre Haute.

The House Ways and Means Committee will hold a hearing Tuesday on the bill, which cleared the Senate in February before being revamped by the House Public Policy Committee.
