Gov. Eric Holcomb will push next year to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco and vaping products from 18 to 21.

That initiative – which Holcomb calls "long overdue" – is part of his 2020 agenda, announced Tuesday.

Health groups and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce have long pushed to raise the legal smoking age to 21, without luck. Holcomb says the sharp spike in vaping among young people helped convince him to push for the change now.

“It’s just horrifying to me that sixth graders are now vaping consistently, are addicted to nicotine,” Holcomb says.

“Connect this network of our port system, our rail system, our road system, internet system,” Holcomb says.

Two years ago, a worker at an Amazon facility in Plainfield, Indiana died after a 1,200 pound forklift crushed him.

After a state safety inspector found it might have happened due to a lack of training, he says Governor Eric Holcomb and other state officials worked to shift blame away from Amazon, hoping to avoid bad press while the state competed to host the company's new headquarters. Holcomb says it didn't happen.

Holcomb’s office says he will be in Florida on Tuesday for a Republican Governors Association conference that was scheduled months ago.

His trip comes as teacher unions say more than 100 school districts around the state will be closed while their teachers head to the Indianapolis protest.

Gov. Eric Holcomb has declared a propane shortage emergency and issued an executive order designed to help boost supply.

The governor’s first executive order of the year will ease restrictions on hours of service for truck drivers who deliver the fuel.

And after a challenging planting season due to spring flooding, the lack of propane is hurting many farmers even more. Farmers rely on propane to dry out grains before they can store and sell it.

Gov. Eric Holcomb could get a primary challenge next year.

Brian Roth, a Republican from Carmel, filed paperwork this week to run.

Roth runs a leadership consulting firm in the affluent Indianapolis suburb. He filed paperwork for a gubernatorial run with the Indiana Election Division, though he’s not commenting on his potential bid.

Roth’s website touts his 30 years of experience in the U.S. Navy and the private and non-profit sectors.

Gov. Eric Holcomb officially launched his re-election bid Saturday and political analysts say Holcomb’s path to a second term is likely an easy one.

No elected Indiana governor has lost a re-election bid since the state began allowing second terms in the 1970s. And Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics director Andrew Downs says it’s unlikely Eric Holcomb will break that trend.

“His polling numbers are pretty good … he also starts out with a strong financial advantage over the Democrats,” Downs says.
