Paretta Autosport’s debut in the Indianapolis 500 this past weekend further raised awareness of the lack of women in motor sports. The mostly women team made history with a female owner, a female driver and majority women pit crew. While not having the finish they wanted on the track, the team is making progress off the track.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Helio Castroneves has joined the exclusive club of four-time Indianapolis 500 winners. He celebrated by scaling the fence at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in front of the largest crowd since the start of the pandemic. The Brazilian joined A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears, his former mentor at Team Penske, as the only four-time winners of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Mears was the last driver to join the club in 1991.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Takuma Sato snatched a second Indianapolis 500 victory as the Japanese racer held off Scott Dixon and ultimately won under caution.

IndyCar officials declined to throw a red flag after a violent crash by Spencer Pigot with just a handful of laps remaining. Pigot needed medical attention on the track, the crash scene was a debris field and there was no way the race could resume without a stoppage.

Penske Reverses Course, Closes Indianapolis 500 To Fans

Aug 4, 2020

Roger Penske has reversed course and decided not to allow fans at the Indianapolis 500 later this month. The 104th running of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" will be the first without spectators, who showed up at Indianapolis Motor Speedway every year even during the Great Depression. It was a flip for Penske, who initially said he wouldn't run the 500 without fans. But as the pandemic continued to spread through the nation, the decision was made to limit capacity to 50%. The speedway then lowered that number to 25% and now has decided on no fans at all.

The Indianapolis 500 will look a little different this August with reduced fans and other health precautions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the race is still expected to draw in more than 50,000 spectators.

Indianapolis 500 Attendance Limited To 25% Capacity

Jul 21, 2020

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Attendance will be limited to 25% capacity for the Indianapolis 500 and spectators will be required to wear face coverings at "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." Indianapolis Motor Speedway can hold approximately 350,000 fans in the grandstands, suites and infield, but officials said last month only 50% capacity would be admitted for the Aug. 23 race. The number was adjusted Tuesday. Tickets will not be sold after Friday.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis 500 will run in August with 50% fan capacity. The  total could still hit six figures at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Indy 500 was bumped from its traditional May date because of the coronavirus pandemic. The 104th Indy 500 will run Aug. 23 at half the total of what is traditionally one of the biggest sporting events of the year. The Greatest Spectacle in Racing can pack about 250,000 fans in the spacious Speedway. That leaves plenty of room to space a total number of fans in the six-figure range.

The Indianapolis 500 will not be run on Memorial Day weekend this year. The race has been rescheduled to Aug. 23 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 104th running of the race is the first since Roger Penske took ownership of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway earlier this year.

Expressing his disappointment, Penske says the decision came in response to the health and safety of event participants and spectators.
