Ivy Tech To Debut Program For Students With Down Syndrome

SELLERSBURG, Ind. (AP) — Ivy Tech Community College is preparing to test a pilot program at one of its southern Indiana campuses that will provide post-secondary education for students with Down syndrome.

The  Ivy Power program is set to begin this fall at the statewide college’s Sellersburg campus, about 10 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky.

The pilot program will offer a two-year course of individualized studies and also provide students with a variety of vocational experiences, including internships and work-study opportunities.

Indiana Community College Offers Firefighters Free Tuition

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — A community college in Indiana is offering free tuition to volunteer firefighters and first responders seeking associate degrees.

Ivy Tech Community College has joined with the Indiana Volunteer Firefighter Association.

The school, with over 40 locations statewide, is providing $250,000 over two years starting in the 2020 spring semester.

Organizers hope the tuition offer will boost the number of volunteers in Indiana.

Prospective firefighters in Indiana often have to complete a mix of state-required certifications and classes for training. A new partnership between Ivy Tech Community College and the Goshen Fire Department hopes to streamline that process.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Ivy Tech Community College is one of four community colleges across the nation chosen for a push to boost single mothers' college success rates.

The national nonprofit Education Design Lab will oversee a structured process under which the four colleges will design, implement and scale efforts intended to dramatically improve single mothers' success rates at the four institutions by addressing the unique needs of those women.
