Juneteenth Celebrated In South Bend

Jun 19, 2018

The Martin Luther King Jr. Center in South Bend hosted its first Juneteenth celebration. Junteenth is a holiday focusing on the Emancipation Proclamation, and the freeing of African American slaves during the Civil War.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19th, 1865, when word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas. The Proclamation was signed by President Lincoln in 1863, though slaves in Texas didn’t learn of the president’s action until two years later.

Ceremonies across the country yesterday celebrated the life of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., on the fiftieth anniversary of his assassination.

South Bend residents also gathered to pay their respects at Leighton Plaza.

Community members gathered around the statue of Dr. King holding hands with Former Notre Dame President Father Theodore Hesburgh, to celebrate the life of the 60s Civil Rights leader.

The statute of Hesburgh and King was revealed during the summer last year.
