Tom Izzo Tests Positive For COVID-19

Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo has tested positive for COVID-19.

The school's athletic department made the announcement Monday. Associate head coach Dwayne Stephens will lead the Spartans' practices while the 65-year-old Izzo is in isolation for 10 days. Izzo, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016, says he has minor symptoms and will stay connected with his coaching staff and players virtually.

Michigan Rolls Out Statewide Coronavirus Exposure App

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan has launched the statewide rollout of a voluntary, free coronavirus app that notifies users if they have potentially been in close contact with infected people. Monday's announcement comes weeks after the state began piloting the technology in Ingham County, including at Michigan State University. State Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon is encouraging all Michiganders to download the app onto their smartphones, especially as COVID-19 cases and related hospitalizations are surging after an initial wave subsided last spring.

Mandatory Quarantine Ordered For 23 MSU Greek Houses

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A county has ordered a two-week quarantine for 23 fraternities and sororities and seven large rental houses near Michigan State University following a coronavirus outbreak that a local health official says is turning into a “crisis.” The quarantine, which is mandatory, means students or others living in the buildings cannot leave except for medical care or necessities that cannot be delivered. Ingham County Heath Officer Linda Vail said Monday that the surge in cases is alarming. Vail acted two days after she urged all MSU students living locally to voluntarily self-quarantine for 14 days.  

MSU Building Named For A KKK Member Will Get New Name

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University is moving to change the name of a campus building after learning that it’s named for a man who belonged to the Ku Klux Klan. Stephen Nisbet’s membership card from the 1920s was discovered at a library at Central Michigan University. MSU's human resources building is named for Nisbet, who was a member of the school’s governing board from 1962-70. Nisbet worked in education and private business and was chairman of the 1961 convention that produced Michigan’s constitution. He died in 1986.

On Michigan State University's website an announcement has been made indicating that the fall semester will now be online. 

MSU Football Suspends Workouts Due To Virus Infections

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan State University football team has suspended workouts and its players will quarantine for 14 days after a second staff member and a player tested positive for the coronavirus. Meanwhile, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has extended a ban on family visitors at nursing homes and congregate care sites through Aug. 31. There's an exception for people who want to see someone in serious or critical condition or in hospice care. Facilities must make "best efforts" to help residents communicate with people by phone or electronic devices.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University says it will take a residence hall out of regular service and use it for students who test positive for the coronavirus. Students who signed up to live on campus can move to Akers Hall or return home for a certain period if they become infected. The dorm can hold roughly 500 people. Housing spokeswoman Kat Cooper says the Akers strategy could create a housing shortage, although it’s not seen as likely at this time. MSU students, staff and visitors are required to wear masks on campus. The fall term starts Sept. 2.

Michigan State: Fall Term To Mix In-Person, Online Classes

DETROIT (AP) — Michigan State University says it will start the fall term on Sept. 2 with a mix of in-person and online classes. President Samuel Stanley Jr. said Wednesday that the fall term "will look different from any previous semester." Stanley posted a letter on MSU's website and invited students to a webcast to answer questions Friday night. Stanley says physical distancing and face coverings to reduce the risk of the coronavirus will be essential. In-person classes will end at Thanksgiving, followed by three weeks of remote instruction and final exams.

Criminal Charges Dismissed Against Former MSU President

DETROIT (AP) — A judge has dismissed criminal charges against former Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon arising from the Larry Nassar sexual assault scandal. Simon was ordered to trial last year on charges that she lied to police about her knowledge of a sexual misconduct complaint against Nassar. The former campus doctor now is serving decades in prison. But Eaton County Judge John Maurer dismissed the case against Simon Wednesday, saying the evidence wasn't sufficient.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued an executive order that effectively shuts down many businesses where people congregate. The list includes bars and restaurants, gyms and health clubs, as well as theaters and other performance venues. Restaurants may still offer delivery and take-out service. Last week, the governor banned most gatherings of more than 250 people as part of the state’s response to the coronavirus. 

She also ordered that more people qualify for unemployment benefits during the global pandemic.

Several Michigan universities say faculty members and students are returning from trips to Chinaas the coronavirus outbreak grows worse.

A Michigan State University spokesman says the university did have a handful of faculty in China on university-sponsored business at the time the outbreak began. But spokesman Dan Olsen says they have all either left the country or are in the process of leaving China.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A lawyer says U.S. authorities declined to admit an Iranian graduate student after he landed at an airport to start classes at Michigan State University.

Alireza Esfidajani was stopped Sunday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and interviewed by agents.

He returned to Iran on Monday.

Ghazal Nicole Mehrani says agents deemed Esfidajani inadmissible but didn't offer any details.

Customs and Border Protection says access to the U.S. isn't guaranteed, even if someone has a visa or a visa waiver.

MSU May Give Students A Day Off On Election Day

But some think the schedule change could undercut efforts to encourage student voting on campus.

Classes could be canceled on Monday, Nov. 2, and Tuesday, Nov. 3, which is Election Day.

Former MSU President To Go On Trial On Criminal Charges

A district court judge made the ruling today after a preliminary exam that took months. The case now moves to Circuit Court. 

Nassar was the MSU and USA Gymnastics doctor who admitted to sexually assaulting his patients for decades.

New MSU President On The Job As Of Today

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University's new president is on the job.

MSU says Samuel Stanley Jr. officially took office Thursday, two months after he was hired by the school's governing board. In a written statement, he says he's proud "to join the Spartan community."

Stanley was president at Stony Brook University in New York. He is MSU's first permanent leader since Lou Anna Simon resigned in January 2018 amid the Larry Nassar scandal .

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University has named a new president in the wake of the most extensive sexual abuse scandal in sports history.

Dr. Samuel Stanley Jr., a medical researcher who has led Stony Brook University in New York for nearly a decade, was chosen by the board of trustees Tuesday.

Several Michigan State University faculty members want to ban sexual relationships between teachers and students.

Professor Mark Waddell is among those asking the University Council to recommend policy changes to prohibit romantic relationships between faculty or academic staff and undergraduate students. Waddell tells the Lansing State Journal that the existing policy lacks clarity to protect students from predatory relationships.

The former president of Michigan State University will be back in court on Monday. Lou Anna Simon is facing multiple criminal charges – including two felonies.

Lou Anna Simon stepped down from the presidency at MSU soon after former university sports doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced for multiple sexual assault convictions.

Simon has since been charged with lying to law enforcement.

The attorney general’s office says Simon lied about what she knew about Nassar and when. The Attorney General’s office opened an investigation into MSU last year. 

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University is selling pieces of Spartan Stadium.

The school says the turf is being replaced after the spring football game on April 13. Sections of grass are being sold for $10 on the school's surplus store website . The sections will be approximately 18 inches by 72 inches.

The grass should be available for pickup on April 15 or soon after that date. MSU plans to contact buyers by email.

The turf is described as hybrid Kentucky bluegrass. It should be transplanted within five days of removal from the stadium.

New Charge Pursued Against Former Michigan State Dean

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — State prosecutors say they'll pursue a second felony charge against a former medical school dean who had oversight of Larry Nassar at Michigan State University.

William Strampel is accused of sexually harassing female students when he was dean of the osteopathic medical school. He's been ordered to trial on a charge of misconduct in office . The attorney general's office wants to add a charge of second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
