Michigan Secretary Of State Branches Reopening Monday

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Secretary of State branch offices will reopen Monday by appointment only for essential transactions not available online. An announcement Thursday said that beginning next week, all 131 branch offices in Michigan will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for certain transactions. Those include including driver licenses and state ID transactions that must be done in-person; title transfers; operator, commercial drivers license, chauffeur, mechanic and motorcycle testing; and seasonal commercial vehicle renewal.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — State health officials say 21 more Hoosiers have died from COVID-19 while another 370 people have been diagnosed with the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus. The 18 additional confirmed deaths reported Wednesday by the Indiana State Department of Health occurred between May 20 and Tuesday, bringing the number of Hoosiers confirmed to have died from COVID-19 to 1,871. Another 159 people have died from probable infections of COVID-19, raising Indiana’s confirmed or presumed deaths to 2,030 since the state recorded its first death on March 15.

Gyms Start Reopening With Precautions In Indiana

Gyms, fitness facilities and community centers started reopening across the state Friday. One owner says he’s excited to open his doors, while also taking new safety precautions in response to COVID-19.

After being closed for months, Brownsburg Fitness saw a steady flow of members the first day it was back open.

Owner Matthew Serd says he had been preparing to reopen the past week, and worked some extra hours to be able to let members in after the governor moved up the timetable to reopen gyms.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is further relaxing stay-at-home restrictions. She says a ban on nonessential health procedures will be lifted May 29, and groups of up to 10 people can gather socially starting Thursday, ahead of the Memorial Day weekend. Retailers can reopen by appointment only, starting Tuesday, as long as there are no more than 10 customers inside. Social distancing requirements remain in place. Whitmer says the stay-home order will likely be extended beyond May 28. Restaurants remain closed to dine-in customers, except in northern Michigan.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — State officials say all of Indiana’s state-operated inns, campgrounds and cabins and will reopen Friday in time for the Memorial Day weekend as coronavirus restrictions are eased across much of Indiana. The state Department of Natural Resources says all of its campgrounds, property-operated cabins, camper cabins and inns would reopen Friday under the eased restrictions approved by Gov. Eric Holcomb. DNR spokesman JB Brindle says the state agency has 7,701 camping sites around the state.

Indiana Plan Keeping Movie Theaters, Playgrounds Closed

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Movie theaters and public playgrounds will remain closed in Indiana for at least three more weeks under revisions to the state’s coronavirus reopening plan. The state’s business and gathering restrictions are being further eased for most of the state beginning Friday. Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a new executive order Thursday that allows social gatherings of up to 100 people and retail stores and malls to operate at 75% capacity. Gyms, community pools and campgrounds will also be allowed to open under rules limiting the number of people and for distancing and cleaning.

US Autoworkers Return, While Possible Vaccine Shows Promise

WARREN, Mich. (AP) — More than 130,000 autoworkers returned to factories across the U.S. in one of the biggest steps yet to restart American industry, while an experimental vaccine against the coronavirus showed encouraging results in an extremely small and preliminary study. Overall, new cases of the novel coronavirus in the U.S. were declining slightly, though infectious disease specialists worried about spikes as states loosen restrictions.

Whitmer: Retail Businesses In Northern Michigan Can Reopen

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has announced that retail businesses in much of northern Michigan, including restaurants and bars, can reopen starting Friday. The bars and restaurants will have to limit their capacity to 50%. Groups will be required to stay 6 feet apart and servers will wear face coverings. The move affects two of the eight regions identified in the governor’s gradual reopening plan amid the coronavirus pandemic. One covers the Upper Peninsula and another includes 17 counties in the northern Lower Peninsula, including the Traverse City area.

The head of the American Hotel and Lodging Association says half of the hotels in the U.S. could close because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The two biggest hotels in Indianapolis suspended operations more than a month ago. And in college towns across the state, hotels are missing out on one of their biggest money making times of the year – graduation season.

The pandemic has caused an 80-percent drop in hotel bookings nationwide. Visit Bloomington Executive Director Mike McAfee says within a few blocks of the courthouse square are about 700 hotel rooms.
