LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Republican businessman John James of Michigan announced Thursday that he will challenge first-term Democratic U.S. Sen. Gary Peters in 2020 in a key state for President Donald Trump's re-election chances.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Republican-backed legislation advancing in Michigan would ban a common second-trimester abortion procedure except to safe a women's life.

Supporters of the bills approved 22-16 by the Senate on a party-line vote Tuesday say it would restrict the use of a "barbaric" procedure except to save a woman's life. Opponents say the measures are unconstitutional and interfere with women's ability to access safe medical care.

Senate Republicans released their budget proposal Thursday and it includes more money for teacher appreciation grants, and changes to funding for virtual schools.

The Senate GOP budget would send $535 million more dollars to schools over the next two years - a slight increase compared to the House proposal.

But the Senate plan would also cut the amount of money that goes to virtual schools based on student enrollment.

Indiana’s new Senator stopped in to the Greater Elkhart Chamber Tuesday. The trip was part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Freshman Forums’ events.

Braun also made stops in South Bend and Granger.

In Elkhart, when asked about the partial government shutdown, Braun spoke of the ‘No Budget, No Pay’ bill he introduced and lamented his new colleague’s inability to pass a budget before a shutdown.

The candidates vying for the Republican nomination for Indiana's U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democrat Joe Donnelly meet to debate one last time before the May 8 Primary Election. Former State Rep. Mike Braun faces off against U.S. Reps. Luke Messer and Todd Rokita.

The debate sponsored by the Indiana Debate Commission takes place at the studios of WFYI in Indianapolis and is moderated by Abdul-Hakim Shabazz.
 

Candidates for Indiana's open U.S. Senate seat debate at 7 PM Tuesday, Oct. 18, in Indianapolis. Former U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh (D), U.S. Rep. Todd Young (R), and Lucy Brenton (L) are vying to replace retiring Sen. Dan Coats (R).

Stutzman is one of several GOP politicians considering making a run for Senator Dan Coats' seat.

The Senate voted down the measure that would have imposed restrictions while officially sanctioning some high-fenced hunting preserves.
