Jeanette Saddler-Taylor

Today our Photo of the Week is certainly fitting for the weather outside. It depicts snow in spring. This photo of  snow and a daffodil and a leftover Easter decoration sums it up pretty well. Jeanette Saddler-Taylor submitted this image taken outside her home in South Bend on April 15, 2020. Jeanette is also a regular contributor to our Michiana Chronicles feature. She says she is referring to this picture as "Mother Nature's whomp upside the head!"

BANGOR, Mich. (AP) — Southwestern Michigan police say a man using heavy machinery to clear snow died after he became trapped beneath part of the machinery.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office says the 40-year-old man was using a skid-steer loader to move snow Tuesday morning at a business near Bangor when he became trapped beneath its bucket.

Police say the man was working under the bucket area to clean snow from near machinery pedals when the bucket lowered onto him.

Lake effect snow brought several inches of snowfall this week to Michiana. Snow is predicted to continue through Tuesday night as temperatures fall.

Many schools in the area are off today due to treacherous road conditions.

Lake effect happens when cold wind blows over a warmer lake. This band brought snow further inland making it almost to Fort Wayne.

If you’re new to Michiana, or if you just never learned, lake effect snow is what happens when cold air meets a warmer Lake Michigan.

“Generally we get some really cold air that flows over the open waters that are a lot warmer," said Megan Dodson with the National Weather Service. "It can cause some instability and that can generate some snow bands in the form of lake effect.”

CHICAGO (AP) — Snow has forced the cancellation of more than 200 flights at Chicago's international airports on Halloween.

Tuesday Michigan state lawmakers plan to consider legislation to help school districts that have to make up snow days.

Severe weather and bitter cold forced many Michigan schools to exceed the number of allowable snow days this year.  A bill going before the Michigan House Education Committee would give school districts a break if the governor declares an emergency because of the weather.

Local ski areas glad for snow, cold weather

Dec 14, 2017

Ski Hills around Michiana are looking forward to higher amounts of snow this year after two years of low snowfall.

The last two years have been rough for ski hills. Snowfall amounts have been low, and temps have been higher, making it difficult to make snow.

Jamie Stafne is the spokesperson for Swiss Valley Ski Area in Jones, Michigan. She said the cold snowy weather right now is ideal for their snow-making equipment.

As Michiana starts to prepare for winter weather, road crews have been working to get plows, salt and drivers ready to roll.

Hiring, ordering salt and plow repairs are just a few things that local highway departments do to get ready for snow and winter weather.

Jeff Taylor is the manager of the Elkhart County Highway Department. He said one of the challenges this year was low unemployment in the county.
