UPDATE: 

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A flight attendant charged with public intoxication after passengers on a Chicago-to-South Bend flight noticed her inebriation has agreed to undergo alcohol abuse counseling.

Forty-nine-year-old Julianne March of Waukesha, Wisconsin, reached a pretrial diversion agreement that includes alcohol abuse evaluation and counseling during her Thursday initial hearing.

If March meets all of its terms the public intoxication charge will be dropped after one year.

South Bend residents gathered Thursday night for the first in a series of seven meetings to give input on police practices. 

People who attended the meeting were broken into small groups with facilitators leading each conversation.

The South Bend Schools new superintendent met with parents, teachers, and community members Wednesday morning for the first “Talks with Todd.”

“Talks with Todd” are an opportunity for anyone to share issues or ideas with South Bend Schools Superintendent Todd Cummings.

Community members can join the South Bend Police Department Tuesday night for the annual National Night Out Against Crime.

The SBPD hosts multiple events for the community throughout the year.

Black Lives Matter activists occupied the sidewalk in front of the County City Building in South Bend for 24 hours this weekend. They are continuing to demand the firing of the police chief more than a month after the fatal police shooting of Eric Logan.

Starting at noon on Saturday, activists held workshops about citizens’ rights in police interactions and wrote slogans with sidewalk chalk. As the evening drew on, they also read from the Bible together.

UPDATE: 

South Bend fire officials report that the fire is now out at the site of Sunday's industrial blaze. There were hot spots that had to be put out as recently as 6am Monday. Now investigators are on scene looking for information on what caused the fire in the first place.

South Bend firefighters battled a fire Sunday evening at an industrial site on the City’s southwest side at the corner of Calvert and Franklin streets.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office has released the following sentencing information regarding Joel Barrozo, 30, who pleaded guilty to charges related to a December crash that killed a woman and two children:

South Bend City Clerk Kareemah Fowler recently resigned her post to be CFO of South Bend Community Schools. That leaves a vacancy to be filled by a unique election.

South Bend residents and members of the City’s Common Council gathered Monday night to brainstorm ways to improve the community.

Community members were broken into five groups to discuss topics including economic development, affordable housing, youth engagement and employment, neighborhood infrastructure, and public safety.

The South Bend Fire Department held a public ceremony to recognize their newly opened fire station. 

Fire Station 9 is located four blocks from the Memorial Park boat launch. Officials say this will help cut the response time for water emergencies by about six minutes. 

The station will also house the only ambulance for the east side of the City.

A public forum in South Bend Sunday night focused on how deep-rooted issues related to policing, poverty, and education are hitting minority communities. Much of the discussion revolved around ideas to improve the historic lack of trust between minorities and the police. 

South Bend residents can now apply for new solar- powered lampposts as part of the Light Up South Bend Initiative.

 The Lamppost Lighting Program is meant to improve safety by adding more street lighting throughout South Bend. The City selected two areas where residents pay less for a lamppost.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg updated the city’s Common Council Monday night on his progress in addressing the police shooting of Eric Logan on June 16. He announced no specific plans, but gave a general preview of things to come.

Buttigieg told the Common Council he was considering a thorough review of the police department before the end of his term. He said he was looking into adding staff to the Board of Public Safety, implementing anti-violence community programs, and investing in technology that would activate body cameras when a weapon is removed from the holster. He acknowledged that many of these ideas would require funding from the city’s budget.

It’s been over two weeks since a black South Bend resident was fatally shot by a white police officer, but the pain and outrage ignited in the community have not gone away. Here's a timeline with some context to give insight into how this incident sparked an outcry.

It was just before 3:30 a.m. on Father’s Day when South Bend police officer Ryan O’Neill responded to a call about a suspicious person at an apartment building.

A group of pastors joined South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg in the lobby of the County-City Building today to pray for the city and to present a plan to the mayor. 

“We are not a dying city but we are a very sick city,” Pastor Williams says. “Residents of the city are sick. And we’re all sick and tired of being sick and tired of being sick.”

Williams gave Buttigieg an envelope that he says contains a "plan" for South Bend.

Debate Watching Parties In South Bend

Debate watching parties are taking place around South Bend tonight as people gather to watch South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and nine other candidates debate tonight.

One group is made up primarily of activists gathered in a small apartment watching with media surrounding them. 

One of the participants does not hesitate to speak out. "I don't understand how you can believe in this process. This isn't for us. We've been in this 20 minutes and nobody has talked about black people yet," says Tiana Batiste-Waddell.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The family of a 54-year-old black man fatally shot by a white officer is suing the officer and the city of South Bend, Indiana, where Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is mayor.

NEW:  

The National Weather Service confirms a second tornado touched down in St. Joseph County Sunday night, in addition to the EF-2 tornado that was previously confirmed.

The second tornado was an EF-0 with winds of 65-70 mph that touched down for a half mile in South Bend near Roosevelt Road east of Ironwood.

The National Weather Service says a storm produced a brief tornado that formed south of US 20 and then moved north before lifting just southeast of the intersection of Ironwood Drive and Inwood Road.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Bill Redman just issued a statement on his department's response to Memorial Hospital early this morning when angry crowds descended on the facility following the shootings at Kelly's Pub. 

Redman says the hospital was put on lockdown.

He goes on to say, "We cannot solve violence with violence! What I'm asking today is that we STOP the violence! STOP the shootings! Our community has suffered enough."

Here is the latest information from the Metro Homicide Unit investigating a killing and mass shooting at Kelly's Pub in South Bend early Sunday:

St. Joseph County –The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) continues toactively investigate after shots fired yesterday, June 23rd, outside of Kelly’s Pub, on 1150Mishawaka Ave, resulted in the death of Brandon D. Williams and injuries to tenadditional individuals.An autopsy was conducted earlier this morning in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for Mr. Williams.A forensic pathologist ruled his cause of death to be gunshot wound and his manner ofdeath to be homicide.As noted in yesterday’s release, according to witness accounts and limited video from thearea, the parking lots immediately surrounding the pub were congested with cars and acrowd of approximately 75-100 individuals at the time of the shooting. While severalwitnesses have been interviewed at the County Metro Homicide Unit, this is an active andon-going investigation. Investigators are still asking that anyone with informationregarding this incident, or anyone there at the time of the shooting, to contact the CountyMetro Homicide Unit at 235-5009 or Crime Stoppers at 288-STOP.At this time, there is no suspect description to release and no arrests have been made.

Lawyer For Eric Logan's Family Says A Lawsuit Is Coming

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A lawyer for the family of a black man fatally shot by a white police officer in the Indiana city where Pete Buttigieg is mayor on Friday accused the Democratic presidential candidate of failing to be aggressive enough in setting rules to curb police misconduct.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg held a press conference Wednesday afternoon with the President of the local NAACP and other city leaders including city council members and the police chief. He talked about what's next for South Bend and about keeping the investigation as transparent as possible. 

Early Sunday morning Sergeant Ryan O’Neill of the South Bend Police Department shot and killed Eric Logan.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A group says it plans to begin accepting patients at an abortion clinic in South Bend next week.

Amy Hagstrom Miller, of the Whole Woman's Health Alliance, said employees began answering phones today and booking appointments for next week.

A federal judge granted an injunction May 31 allowing the nonprofit to open the clinic without a state license pending the outcome of a lawsuit.

The state has appealed that ruling.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg attended a press conference with community leaders Wednesday afternoon at the Civil Rights Heritage Center in South Bend. 

Surrounded by civil rights leaders in the city, Buttigieg said he will not rule out an independent investigation into the death of Eric Logan. 

Logan died Sunday when he was shot by a South Bend officer who claims Logan had a knife.
