South Bend, Mishawaka, and St. Joseph County officials discussed a proposal Thursday night to fund the county’s 911 Dispatch Center by pulling money from other agencies, like local libraries, public transit and the South Bend Airport.

The South Bend Common Council voted against a rezoning petition that would have paved the way for a new apartment complex for chronically homeless people.

The South Bend Heritage Foundation was planning to develop the site on Washington Street. By 2021 it would have hosted a 20 unit permanent supportive housing apartment building. 

After hours of testimony and public comment the board ultimately decided not to rezone.

The University of Notre Dame with support from the City of South Bend broke ground Monday on the new Robinson Community Learning Center. 

The Robinson Community Learning Center is a space where South Bend residents can take classes, join clubs, and listen to lectures.

South Bend residents gathered once again on Tuesday night to give input on police practices - this time on the use of force policy. 

Attendees were given hypothetical scenarios a police officer might encounter on the job. They discussed what actions the officer should take and how much force would be appropriate in each situation.

With more funding from state sources the city of South Bend is no longer planning to open a gateway center for people who are homeless. The city is now planning for more permanent supportive housing.

The gateway center was going to be a triage for those experiencing homelessness. It would house people temporarily and transition them into more stable situations. But the city only had the funding for 18 units of permanent supportive housing.

The city of South Bend and the University of Notre Dame broke ground Monday on a joint project in Seitz Park.

For the city, the groundbreaking is about the next phase in the My South Bend Parks and Trails project. For the University, it’s about what’s underground.

 

A 2.5 megawatt hydroelectric plant, powered by the St. Joe River, will be installed under Seitz Park. Once finished, the plant will provide 7 percent of Notre Dame’s power.

A writing workshop in South Bend Saturday morning is designed specifically for kids on the autism spectrum.

Write Differently is a creative writing workshop catered to students with autism in grades three through 12.

A bench in a neighborhood in South Bend is providing residents with more than just a place to relax. 

The Laughing Bench at 911 Portage Avenue is meant to give people a sense of community. It’s said that if you sit on the bench with another person, you can’t help but laugh.

A group protested against a mega-industrial development west of South Bend at the City-County building and the County Council meeting last night.

The Indiana Enterprise Center would redevelop a large area between South Bend and New Carlisle. Twenty-two thousand acres that is now mostly farms.

Protestors from the Open Spaces and Agricultural Alliance of St. Joseph County say the land has already been developed...to grow food.

UPDATE: 

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A flight attendant charged with public intoxication after passengers on a Chicago-to-South Bend flight noticed her inebriation has agreed to undergo alcohol abuse counseling.

Forty-nine-year-old Julianne March of Waukesha, Wisconsin, reached a pretrial diversion agreement that includes alcohol abuse evaluation and counseling during her Thursday initial hearing.

If March meets all of its terms the public intoxication charge will be dropped after one year.

South Bend residents gathered Thursday night for the first in a series of seven meetings to give input on police practices. 

People who attended the meeting were broken into small groups with facilitators leading each conversation.

The South Bend Schools new superintendent met with parents, teachers, and community members Wednesday morning for the first “Talks with Todd.”

“Talks with Todd” are an opportunity for anyone to share issues or ideas with South Bend Schools Superintendent Todd Cummings.
