As of 2018, Indiana led the nation in steel production — a process that puts out a lot of greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution. In order to meet climate goals, steel companies in Indiana will have to reduce those emissions significantly.

ArcelorMittal announced it’s selling several northwest Indiana steel plants to an Ohio-based company in a deal worth nearly $1.5 billion. The sale was motivated by a need to please investors after a year of losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Manufacturing groups in Michigan are welcoming President Trump’s proclamation that he’s lifting tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada and Mexico…effective today.

Manufacturers say the move should pave the way for a new deal to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Companies in Michigan complain the year-long trade dispute between the U-S and Canada has cost them billions of dollars and put existing jobs at risk.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the retaliatory tariffs were causing harm to workers on both sides of the border.
