THREE OAKS, Mich. (AP) — A man who robbed a small town bank in southwestern Michigan and tried to rob another has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison. David Floyd’s sentence last week was enhanced by his previous criminal record. Floyd has ties to Michigan City, Indiana. He admitted to robbing $11,300 from the former New Buffalo Savings Bank in Three Oaks, and attempting to rob the G.W. Jones Exchange Bank in Edwardsburg. Floyd’s attorney says he had a BB gun and “never intended to harm anyone.” She says he had a drug problem.

Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks is planning an expansion project in Valparaiso amid continuing issues with Three Oaks’ wastewater system.

Journeyman is currently paying to have its waste hauled to LaPorte and Niles since the system in Three Oaks cannot handle the volume or content. The distillery began the hauling after a back and forth with the village over the wastewater system and Journeyman’s discharge.

Journeyman Distillery has two weeks to start hauling off their waste in a short term agreement with the Village of Three Oaks to deal with water issues.

That was the conclusion to a contentious and well-attended council meeting Wednesday night.

What’s the Problem?

Three Oak’s wastewater ponds use bacteria to break down waste to the point where it is safe to dump into into local waterways. They can’t handle the waste from Journeyman.

The Village of Three Oaks

Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks has been issued a cease and desist order from the Village and told to either find an alternate wastewater disposal or quit production.

The Village of Three Oaks ordered Journeyman to stop production because the village is unable to handle the waste water they are creating.

The waste water system in the village is several ponds that hold the waste. They are scheduled to be dredged this fall. They have not been dredged since they were put in, in the 1970s.
