Michiana Chronicles: COVID intermission continued

Having moseyed down U.S. Highway 1 to Key West in June, we took a respite at home to see if we were infected by any of the unvaccinated and unmasked in the southerly climes. Finding ourselves safe, thanks to our vaccination and mask-wearing, in late July we decided to venture to the other end of the spectrum, U.S. Highway 1 in Maine.

In May, the New Yorker magazine featured a cover of little cartoon people tentatively opening a gigantic door. It was easy to imagine the creaking sound that captures our collective anxiety and hope about this season of emergence. Hasn’t it been weird, worrying, and sometimes wonderful?

Hotels are seeing more demand as people take vacations, and more are expected over the summer. But the industry’s recovery is uneven and Indiana’s will likely take longer than other areas. A national hotel industry group is urging Congress to pass legislation that would give direct relief to hotel operators and workers needing the financial help to fill the gap while travel returns.

Over the years I grew tired of the not always faster Interstate highway route to see family on the west side of Saint Louis. On I-80 around Chicago, the Slinky-style traffic would have me in the driver’s seat shivering and levitating with frustration.Then there’s the lulling boredom of I-55, where one Illinois mile undulates as mildly and blandly as the next.

Whitmer Warns Against Spring Break Travel To Florida

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says a factor in Michigan’s surging COVID-19 cases is fewer people were infected earlier in the pandemic than in other states. She also is concerned about spring break travel, particularly to Florida. Florida and Michigan have reported the highest and second-highest number of cases of a more contagious variant that was first identified in the U.K. Michigan had the United States' worst infection rate in the past two weeks. Whitmer on Friday recommended that people get tested after in-state, out-of-state or international travel.

It’s spring break season for area schools, just as coronavirus cases and hospitalizations begin to rise nationwide.

As of April 1, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still doesn’t recommend domestic or international travel, even for fully vaccinated people. But, St. Joseph County Deputy Health Officer Dr. Mark Fox said he expects many people to travel anyway.
