LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed legislation to prohibit the sale of an over-the-counter cough suppressant to minors unless they have a prescription.

The restriction on dextromethorphan will take effect next July. Dextromethorphan, or DXM, is found in many cough and cold medicines but has been abused by teenagers seeking a hallucinogenic high.

Retailers selling the over-the-counter drug will be required to ask for ID unless a customer appears to be at least 25 years old.

Vape Shop Sues To Stop Michigan's Ban On Flavored E-Cigs

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The owner of a northern Michigan vape shop is suing to stop Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's ban on flavored electronic cigarettes, contending the emergency rules are illegal and will force him to close his store.

Marc Slis, who operates 906 Vapor in Houghton, filed the lawsuit in Houghton County Circuit Court on Wednesday. It is believed to be the first of what could be several legal challenges against Whitmer's ban .

Stores are supposed to start complying with the ban on Oct. 2.

Tonight a town hall style meeting is planned at Benton Harbor High School regarding the state of Michigan's plan to suspend operations at the high school. 

The meeting will be in the high school's student commons starting at 6pm. School officials have invited Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to attend the meeting. 

In late May, the Michigan Dept. of Treasury announced a plan to close Benton Harbor High School in the fall of 2020 and to send students elsewhere in the corner of southwestern Michigan.


LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Republican-backed legislation advancing in Michigan would ban a common second-trimester abortion procedure except to safe a women's life.

Supporters of the bills approved 22-16 by the Senate on a party-line vote Tuesday say it would restrict the use of a "barbaric" procedure except to save a woman's life. Opponents say the measures are unconstitutional and interfere with women's ability to access safe medical care.


There is a new state department in charge of environmental protection in Michigan starting Monday. That’s under an executive order from Governor Gretchen Whitmer to create the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.  

Liesl Clark is the director of the new department. She says the state still has to deal with the Flint water crisis, and PFAS contamination of drinking water.


Michigan Gov. Whitmer Nets GOP, Business Support For Tuition-Free Programs

DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is netting key support from the business community and some Republican lawmakers for her large-scale plans to provide debt-free tuition to high school graduates and older adults who want to learn new job skills.

The development is a boost for one of the Democrat's signature policy goals — increasing the number of working-age adults with a postsecondary degree or certificate to 60% by 2030, from 45% now.

Canadian pipeline company Enbridge says it's "surprised and disappointed" by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's finding that a law authorizing construction of an oil pipeline tunnel beneath the waterway linking Lakes Huron and Michigan is unconstitutional.

MSP Seeks To Livestream Dashcams

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State Police want to invest more than $2 million dollars into technology to livestream patrol car dashboard cameras following a Detroit teenager's death after a state trooper used a stun gun on him.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer included the technology upgrade in this year's state budget proposal. It would allow supervisors to monitor pursuits and other incidents in real time.

Burglary Outside Michigan Governor's Residence

An arrest has been  made after property was stolen from two vehicles parked at the official residence of Michigan's governor. 

State police say a suspect was arrested Friday. Police declined to provide details of the theft or the suspect. How the person got onto the gated property early Thursday also was not released.

Armed security patrols the property where the ranch-style home sits. There are also security cameras.
