Early voters turned out in record numbers in Indiana ahead of Tuesday's midterms.
On Monday you’d have been hard pressed to find a parking spot anywhere near the County-City building in South Bend as people turned up to early vote. There was a line snaking across the lobby as people waited to cast their ballots.
One that did was Marques Bolden. “I think it’s important to vote," he said. "Being African-American history has proven that we had to fight to get the right to vote and that’s very important to me personally.”
For first-time midterm voters David Riggle and Jacob Asper, healthcare is what turned them out. “Well the pre-existing conditions,” Riggle started.
“Yeah, I have Crohn's," Asper added.
“Yeah and I have Cancer," Riggle said. "So we’re worried about that, losing our healthcare.” Asper nodded.
Leslie Garvey is a naturalized American citizen who’s been voting in every election since she gained the right. “I lived in Canada and I didn’t vote there, and I lived in Europe. So when I finally became an American citizen I was thrilled to vote.”
Early voting closed at noon. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
