A bipartisan climate bill sponsored by Indiana and Michigan legislators passed the U.S. Senate Thursday.
The Growing Climate Solutions Act would establish a program to help farmers, ranchers and foresters adopt sustainable practices like cover cropping and reforestation.
It also aims to make it easier for landowners to access voluntary carbon markets, where they can buy carbon offsets. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and increase the amount of carbon in the soil.
The act was introduced by Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN) and Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI). It was co-sponsored by more than 50 other senators, including Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) and Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI).
The act will now go to the U.S. House for revisions and approval.
