Spin Cycle

Touring from New York CIty...

Since 2014, contemporary jazz band Spin Cycle has been bringing their original music to concert halls and clubs across the US and Canada. Co-lead by Scott Neumann and Tom Christensen, the band’s highlight is their flexibility, reach and capacity to surprise their audiences. On any given song, you might encounter the modal influence of John Coltrane, the second-line funk of New Orleans, or the edgy experimentation of free jazz. Featuring guitarist Pete McCann and bassist Phil Palombi, both bandleaders and well-respected artists in their own right, Spin Cycle has spent the last 9 years touring, recording, and providing educational workshops at colleges across the U.S. and Canada. The band released their fourth CD, Spin Cycle 3 last year on their label Sound Footing Records.

There is, to be sure, plenty of high-level musical variety provided by Spin Cycle, with compositions by Christensen, a consummate multi-instrumentalist who mostly plays tenor saxophone, and by Neumann a versatile and expressive drummer. Having performed in all kinds of settings including the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Mandolin Project, David Liebman, the Gil Evans Project, Madeleine Peyroux’s touring group, Broadway pit bands and with Cecile McLorin Salvant. The co-leaders know how to bring out the intimacy of a ballad as well as the soulful feeling of swing.

All Music Guide describes saxophonist and woodwind specialist Tom Christensen as having “the goods to be a major force within the global modern jazz arena.” A mainstay in the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra since 1996, Tom has also recorded and performed with jazz masters Joe Lovano, Paquito Dʼrivera, Maria Schneider, Darcy James Argue, David Sanchez, Don Sebesky, John Hollenbeck and The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Tomʼs solo project, New York School (Playscape) was named one of the Top Ten Albums of the year by All About Jazz. Tom can be heard with Cecile McLorin Salvant on her most recent project Ogresse, on Rufus Reidʼs Grammy nominated CD Quiet Pride, David Liebmanʼs A Tribute to Wayne Shorter, and Ryan Truesdellʼs Grammy nominated The Gil Evans Project- Lines of Color. He is the author of several books on jazz pedagogy, co-founder of Sound Footing Records, co-leads the band Spin Cycle and teaches jazz at New Yorkʼs prestigious Fieldston School.

Since arriving in New York City in 1988, drummer, composer, bandleader and educator Scott Neumann has been involved in a diverse and creative mixture of musical experiences. David Liebman described Scott as saying, “Scott is one of the best drummers in New York who can handle all types of musical situations from small group to big band.” Scott currently leads, and composes for, his current project Spin Cycle (Sound Footing Records), which over the past nine years, has toured the U.S. and Canada numerous times and released four CDs on their Sound Footing record label. As a performer, Scott has toured Europe, South America and Asia with such luminaries as Madeline Peyroux, David Liebman and the Woody Herman Orchestra. Since moving to New York City he has performed on over 80 CDs as a sideman. Scott has also performed in the orchestras of over twenty Broadway productions ranging from the classic shows Cabaret, 42nd St., Radio City Christmas Spectacular to the more modern productions of Avenue Qand Xanadu. As an educator, Scott is on the faculty of Lehigh University and LaGuardia Community College in Queens, N.Y.
