The University of Notre Dame has released this year’s study on its economic impact on the area. For the first time it looks beyond South Bend.

The numbers come from 2017. They track impact made by the university’s operational and capital investments, research spending, spending by students, visitors and event attendees, and increased wages earned by graduates. It comes out to $2.46 billion annually.

Notre Dame puts out the information once every five years. Traditionally the impact was only tracked in South Bend and the surrounding areas in St. Joseph County. This year it expanded into Elkhart and Marshall counties.

Regina Emberton is the President and CEO of the South Bend-Elkhart Regional Partnership. She said looking at a wider area is a more accurate gauge of the true impact of the university.

“The companies that collaborate with the university in obtaining the research and development skills, the entrepreneurial ecosystem and things like that are well beyond just the city of South Bend or St. Joseph County.”

Also new this year is tracking of wage premiums, which means the increased wages that Notre Dame grads both make, and then spend in the area.
