The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved changes to DTE Energy's MI Green Power plan, which lets customers subsidize renewable energy.
The MI Green Power plan lets customers pay extra for the utility's renewable energy projects that go further than the state's 15% mandate.
State regulators questioned how much the utility was spending to market the plan. DTE Energy says it will lower that spending dramatically in the future.
The MPSC also asked the utility to offer customers more options for participation. The utility says it will offer customers the choice of a plan that supports its wind energy project only, or its wind plus solar projects.
Regulators also asked DTE Energy to have a plan to add renewable projects, once the current projects are fully subsidized.
DTE says it will plan to add more renewables once customer participation in the current MI Green Power projects reaches 75%. It's currently at 59%.
