Republican state Representative Ryan Berman has announced his bid for candidacy for Attorney General.

Berman said he agrees with some positions taken by current Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel,  but she strays too much into policy making.

He cited her support of Governor Gretchen Whitmer's reliance on state law to control the spread of COVID-19, and her office's lawsuit to try to shut down Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac.

"Not only shut down the current Line 5, because she thinks it poses risks," said Berman, "but stop the building of a new tunnel and just shutting it down, which is really disastrous for our economy."

Berman also called Nessel's activity on social media undignified and not fitting for the office she holds.  Nessel frequently intersperses lighthearted personal comments with her opinions on the law on Twitter.

A statement from Nessel's re-election campaign said she has met her previous campaign promises. One of those promises was to try to shut down Line 5.

The statement said voters won't want to turn back the clock to when the Attorney General's office shielded special interests and partisan priorities.

Candidates for Michigan Attorney General are chosen at state party conventions.
