SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The family of a 54-year-old black man fatally shot by a white officer is suing the officer and the city of South Bend, Indiana, where Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is mayor.

UPDATE:

An official with the St. Joseph County Courts confirms a special prosecutor has been named in the investigation into the June 16th shooting death of Eric Logan by South Bend officer Ryan O'Neill. 

Richard Hertel of Ripley County, Indiana will head up the case. 

Hertel has been a prosecutor in Ripley County since 1988.

The St. Joseph County Prosecuting Attorney has requested a Special Prosecutor to investigate the June 16th officer-involved shooting of Eric Logan.

Following the announcement, a spokesperson for South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg issued this statement:

“I respect and support Prosecutor Cotter’s decision to seek an outside, special prosecutor to investigate the circumstances of Eric Logan’s death. Our community is in anguish, and for all of us to come to terms with what happened, it is vital that the investigation be fair, thorough, and impartial.”

In the aftermath of a town hall that was at times hostile Sunday in South Bend, Pete Buttigieg has sent out a campaign email to try and explain what is happening to his supporters.

For 90 minutes Sunday afternoon a town hall played out at Washington HIgh School in South Bend designed to be a first step in moving forward from the Eric Logan shooting.

Logan, who was black, died June 16 after being shot by a white South Bend officer. 

For much of the 90 minutes, a nearly packed auditorium saw shouting and a meeting that at times devolved as people vented their frustrations with the South Bend Police Department, its policies, its history and its leadership.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg's spokesperson issued information regarding an upcoming town hall meeting, making good on the promise the mayor made Friday night to upset citizens in the wake of the police shooting that killed Eric Logan.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski showed up at a march Friday evening for shooting victim Eric Logan. They both engaged with activists.

Logan was shot and killed by officer Ryan O’Neill. O’Neill says Logan was breaking into cars and threatened him with a knife. O’Neill’s body camera was not recording at the time of the incident.

Since then, tempers have been running high in South Bend. Shardae Word said during the march that having a police shooting like this happen in South Bend makes it seem more real.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A lawyer for the family of a black man fatally shot by a white police officer in the Indiana city where Pete Buttigieg is mayor on Friday accused the Democratic presidential candidate of failing to be aggressive enough in setting rules to curb police misconduct.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg held a press conference Wednesday afternoon with the President of the local NAACP and other city leaders including city council members and the police chief. He talked about what's next for South Bend and about keeping the investigation as transparent as possible. 

Early Sunday morning Sergeant Ryan O’Neill of the South Bend Police Department shot and killed Eric Logan.

Wednesday night people gathered on the basketball court at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreational Center in South Bend to remember victims of gun violence, including Eric Logan. 

Logan was killed by a South Bend Police officer Sunday. 

Organizers designed the event as a forum for concerned community members  to share and to vent their frustrations. 

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and his husband Chasten attended. Buttigieg had been criticized by some in the community for not attending a vigil for Logan that was held Monday.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg attended a press conference with community leaders Wednesday afternoon at the Civil Rights Heritage Center in South Bend. 

Surrounded by civil rights leaders in the city, Buttigieg said he will not rule out an independent investigation into the death of Eric Logan. 

Logan died Sunday when he was shot by a South Bend officer who claims Logan had a knife.

During a broadcast on WUBS, a radio station in South Bend, the death of Eric Logan was front and center Tuesday afternoon. 

Logan died Sunday after being shot by a South Bend Police officer who says Logan had a knife. 

A man who claims to be a spokesperson for Logan's family says he has heard from Jesse Jackson. The family is trying to plan a march for this weekend in South Bend.

Community members at a vigil in South Bend Monday night are looking for answers following the shooting death of 53-year-old Eric Logan by a police officer early Sunday morning.

Ken Cotter, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor, says Sgt. Ryan O'Neill, the officer who fired at Eric Logan, did not have his body camera or vehicle camera activated.
