South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg gave his recommendations regarding the rerouting of the South Shore Train Line at the city’s common council meeting last night.

He says he'd like to see the  South Shore Line downtown. It would run alongside, if not be combined with the Transpo Station on South Street.

South Shore Line train ticket fares to Chicago will increase beginning Sunday.

The 5-percent increase was approved by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District in May and will fund a new automated safety system aimed at preventing crashes due to human error.

NICTD (Nick-Ted) says the implementation of the safety system is part of a federal mandate and the only way to fund it is through fare increases.

One-way tickets from South Bend to Chicago will increase to 14 dollars and 25 cents.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District has added a train tracker to the South Shore Line.

The train tracker shows in real time where South Shore Line trains are en route between South Bend and Chicago.

Nicole Barker is with the South Shore Line. She said the goal is to make sure people have more information.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, or NICTD, will host a final public hearing this evening regarding a proposal to increase fare prices about 5 percent.

Revenue generated by the 5 percent fare increase would pay for Positive Train Control, a safety system mandated through the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008, which can slow speeding trains, and override human operating errors.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao met with Indiana leaders on Tuesday in the Michiana area to open Indiana’s toll road and discuss details of the South Shore Train expansion and double tracking project. Chao touted the public-private partnerships used in the two projects.

She said Indiana’s work on the toll road and South Shore rail line should be viewed as models for the rest of the country.
