Elkhart is looking into fixing a fountain that was damaged during a police chase last week.

The century-old fountain is undamaged but several Italian marble benches were broken.

Mike Lightner is the head of Elkhart’s Buildings and Grounds department, “What had happened is, the car hit a utility pole, after it hit the utility pole it ran into our marble seating wall and broke several pieces of that.”

Lightner said the value of the fountain, a statue of Dr. Havilah Beardsley, is not only in dollars, “It was our founding father that started Elkhart so I think it means everything to the city.”

Lightner said the city does not employ anyone who can do the repairs.

He said they are seeking estimates from outside contractors but are having difficulty finding anyone in the area who has the skills for the repairs.

Lightner said they do not yet have an estimate for the cost of the repairs or a timeline for the work.
