The Elkhart Grand Prix returns this weekend starting Friday, August 11.
Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese says it’s been a long road in planning for the Grand Prix, but he and those involved in the organization of the event say they’re excited.
Neese says he knows that not everyone is a fan of go-karts, but he says the support for the race is one that can’t be ignored.
“There’s been about a 22 year absence, but there’s been a substantial amount of enthusiasm. We didn’t give up on this dream,” Neese said, “it was just simply something that I and others felt that there was the ability to bring back. And it’s not just about the racing. It’s about safety, it’s about having a good time; it’s about economic development. It’s about showcasing the city of Elkhart.”
Thor Industries and the United States Auto Club Karting are among those involved in the setup and planning of the event.
The 22 year absence was due to safety concerns of the old races. But Neese says safety was a top priority when the planning of the weekend long event began.
The course will start at Waterfall Drive and High Street and follow the river down to Elkhart Avenue, to Nibco Parkway and down Jackson Boulevard, and back to Waterfall Drive.
The race will kick off today at 5 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and other kid friendly activities. Scheduled events will continue tomorrow Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
