Elkhart, St. Joseph River pass flood stage

The city of Elkhart is offering residents sandbags to combat the rising water from snowmelt and Tuesday’s rain.

Sandbags are available at the Elkhart Street Department or by delivery by calling Elkhart’s Emergency Management Department at 970-7996.

Northside Boulevard in South Bend from Roberts to Oakland is closed due to flooding. The City of South Bend is posting road closure updates on its Facebook page.

  The Elkhart River has overflown its banks near American Park. Island Park is also expected to flood, both parks, the Elkhart Environmental Center, McNaughton Park and the Riverwalk are closed until further notice.

Residential flooding around Sixth Street and South Shore Drive is predicted.

The Saint Joseph River has also passed flood stage. It is expected to peak Thursday in Elkhart at more than 27 feet and in South Bend at 11.5 feet. Flood stage is 23 feet in Elkhart, and 4.5 feet in South Bend.

The Elkhart River at Goshen is expected to peak on Wednesday at about 11 feet. Actionable flooding at that point is six feet. 

Rain is forecast for the area for the rest of this week. A flood warning is in effect for Elkhart and St. Joseph Counties in Indiana and Berrien County in Michigan until 4 p.m. Tuesday and a flood watch until midnight. There are also flood warnings along the Tippecanoe and Yellow Rivers.
