Paving Season Underway in South Bend

Paving season is officially underway in South Bend. The city’s Department of Public Works today released its list of projects for the year.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg said the city would like residents to be informed of when paving will take place, and besides releasing the scheduled work dates, they will also launch an interactive website in the next

few days that will track work progress. Streets set to be paved include Ironwood Drive and Western Avenue.

Buttigieg said a combination funding factors, like 2017’s gas tax increase and Indiana’s Community Crossings Initiative have allowed the city to increase paving by at least 40 percent this year. But he said an increase to the gas tax is not the answer to funding infrastructure.

“The adjustments to the gas tax were an important step for the medium term,” Buttigieg said, “I think we still have some problem solving to do to figure out how to solve this for the long term.”

Streets were assessed based on an industry standard rating system. Each street is expected to take about three to five days to complete and will require closures. There are more than 50 projects slated for the season.
