South Bend Accepting Applications For "Light Up South Bend" Initiative

Barbara Anguiano

The City of South Bend is receiving applications for the 2018 Lamppost Lighting Program through October 10th. The program helps owners purchase low-cost, energy-efficient front yard lamp posts as well as with installations.

The Lamppost Lighting Program has been around since 2015 through South Bend’s Division of Engineering and as part of the the Light Up South Bend initiative. Light Up South Bend aims to improve residential safety through the installation of neighborhood street lamps.

This year, the City has designated two “target areas,” based on income, number of vacant lots, and need for lighting in the neighborhood. One is in the Near Northwest Neighborhood and the other between Western Avenue and Olive Street. While most of the city will fall under the 50/50 cost share, with the cost of lamps being $200.00, homeowners within target areas will pay 10% of the total cost, equalling $40.00.

Sharon Sexton is a resident of the Near Northwest Neighborhood and had a light installed this year. She says she feels safer.

“I have my grandkids now,” she said, “And it’s dangerous for them to be out here at night because it’s so dark out here.”
