In contrast to Michigan's borders with Ohio and Wisconsin, the Michigan-Indiana border has never faced any controversy. It was last surveyed in 1827, and most of the original wooden markers have long since rotted away.

Efforts to determine the exact location of the Michigan-Indiana State Line are moving forward in Cass County.

The border was last surveyed almost 200 years ago, and the wooden mile posts have long since rotted away. Now, the state of Michigan has given border counties funding to resurvey the line.

“This is really exciting because I know that this is an initiative that the state has been trying to get off the ground now for years, and they finally are putting the wheels into motion,” Cass County GIS Director Alex Biles told the county commissioners Thursday.

The commissioners agreed to hire DLZ to survey Cass County’s portion of the state line, at a cost of $70,800. Biles said the company has experience working on the border.

“They’ve completed some work already in Berrien County and in Milton Township, actually, for the Indiana grant, which is separate,” Biles explained.

The surveying work is expected to be completed next year.
