Teal Pumpkins Mean Halloween Inclusion For Kids With Allergies

FARE

Halloween is on Wednesday and lots of area kids will be out trick or treating. But for kids with food allergies, Halloween can be a difficult holiday.

The Teal Pumpkin project is a movement to raise awareness for food allergies and create a more inclusive experience for kids who have them.

People who hand out candy to trick or treaters can buy some non-food treats--think stickers, or small toys-- put out a teal pumpkin and have those treats available for kids who can’t have candy.

Erica Andert is the founder of the Michiana Food Allergy Support Group.

“I think this gives the kids an idea and a helpful way of feeling like they’re included and they don’t have to feel left out.”

Andert said the project is not just for traditional trick or treat. If you participate in other Halloween activities where candy is usually handed out, having a teal pumpkin and non-food options can make all kids feel included.
