As the consolidation of the Elkhart County courts moves closer to reality, county officials held the first of several “visioning sessions” to discuss what the facility might look like.
County judges and magistrates, as well as the prosecutor and Sheriff’s offices, gave input on what the 32-acre campus between Elkhart and Goshen should ultimately look like.
One theme that emerged was the importance of embedded digital technology. Judges said the COVID-19 pandemic has made appearing in court for minor offenses, like traffic violations, a thing of the past. Building virtual hearing technology into the new facility, they agreed, would “improve efficiency and access for all citizens in the county.”
Another theme that emerged: the building has to look good. Commissioner Suzie Weirick said the design should be timeless, "so that in fifty years, we’re not embarrassed to look at it.”
Additional visioning meetings will be held as the design and construction process for the consolidated courts facility continues.
