Debate Watching Parties In South Bend

Justin Hicks/WVPE

Debate watching parties are taking place around South Bend tonight as people gather to watch South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and nine other candidates debate tonight.

One group is made up primarily of activists gathered in a small apartment watching with media surrounding them.

One of the participants does not hesitate to speak out. "I don't understand how you can believe in this process. This isn't for us. We've been in this 20 minutes and nobody has talked about black people yet," says Tiana Batiste-Waddell.

She goes on to say that Buttigieg should't talk about solutions for the nation until he's fixed his own home.

There is a "Pete for America" party going on as well at the LaSalle Apartments in South Bend.

Justin Howell is on the Pete team. He came armed with his Mac so he could get the message of tonight's debate out on the Pete for America Reddit channel.

Buttigieg started the debate by being greeted in Spanish. He responded in Spanish and his first question was about paying for college. Buttigieg also spoke to healthcare plans. He does not believe in abandoning all private pay plans.

Buttigieg also says he believes in offering health care options to undocumented immigrants. "This is not about a handout. This is an insurance program," Buttigieg says.

Other candidates in their answers have acknowledged that Buttigieg is making some good points on the debate stage.

There was a light turnout for a debate watching party at the West Side Democratic Club. They made their first positive show of reaction when Buttigieg said "it should also be affordable to not go to college."

A smattering of hands also went up at the West Side Democratic Club when the candidates are asked "who would give up their private insurance."
