The University of Notre Dame is hosting a research session and panel discussion Friday about the Holocaust as reported on in American Catholic newspapers of the time.
History Unfolded is a nationwide research project headed by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The idea is to have ‘citizen historians’ look through archives from their local newspapers and pull out any articles about the Holocaust.
Those articles are digitized and filed in the museums archives for further research and for exhibition at the museum.
History Unfolded has been around for about three years now. Marsha Stevenson is a librarian at Notre Dame. She says the school got involved more recently.
“We got started with this about a year ago when we met someone from the Holocaust Museum and as we began speaking, it occurred to us that we at Hesburgh Library have really a wonderful collection of American Catholic newspapers.”
The event begins with a research session at looking for articles in the microfilm archives, followed at 1:30 p.m. by a panel discussion, in room 102 in Hesburgh Library, about the History Unfolded project and the Catholic newspapers, then a reception.
The panel speakers are William Donahue, a Holocaust scholar and director of Notre Dame’s Nanovic Institute for European Studies; Judy Shroyer, president of the Michiana Jewish Historical Society; and Kevin Cawley, the Notre Dame archivist who handles the Catholic historical collections.
