New Recovery Community For Women To Open In South Bend

The Upper Room Recovery Community in South Bend is getting started with renovation work for a new women’s community.

The Upper Room has operated a men’s recovery community in South Bend since the early 80s. It’s a sober living community that partners with other agencies to provide counseling, job training, and other services to those recovering from addiction.

The new women’s community is expected to open in January.

Rich Fox is the director of The Upper Room. He said the other agencies they work with are glad to have this resource for women.

“What we try to be is a resource for the other agencies here so the people who have a good start in recovery and then they have a safe place to come and they can work on themselves and their employment and their recovery.”

Fox said residents usually stay about a year, then move on to a more usual housing situation.

He said the new women’s house will have 16 beds, a little more than half the capacity of the existing men’s home. The home on North Main has been rezoned for the facility and is awaiting contractors and renovations before it can be opened.
