The South Bend Fire Department is installing alert systems in response rigs to notify drivers that they're responding to nearby emergencies, as well notifying other first responders of their location during emergencies and routine matters.

Emergency dispatch systems across Michigan said they were unable to field 911 calls Tuesday afternoon. Service was being restored by evening.
