Family caregivers of medically complex children will soon no longer be able to provide attendant care — meaning they have to transition to other Medicaid programs. The Family and Social Services Administration provided updates this week on one of the main programs families can shift to in July.

The Family and Social Services Administration proposed cuts to a program that supports care for children with disabilities in response to a $1 billion shortfall. Indiana’s lieutenant governor and families of medically complex children are calling for FSSA to pause the implementation of the cuts.

The lieutenant governor and several lawmakers have called for the Family and Social Services Administration to “pause” proposed cuts. The proposed cuts would affect caregivers providing attendant care as “legally responsible individuals.”

About one in 10 Hoosier households report difficulties getting enough healthy food with consistency. Indiana senators passed Senate Bill 334 Tuesday to simplify access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or “SNAP,” also known as food stamps, for people over 60 or who have disabilities and their households.

The survey from the Family and Social Services Administration will measure a person’s overall well being and the resources available to a person in recovery from addiction, and help track the overall recovery capital of the state.

In Indiana, only about half of elderly Hoosiers eligible for Medicaid are aging at home. FSSA has been working to help increase that, but the state agency is worried its plan could be disrupted by a bill that’s making its way through the legislative process.
