Grapes, Apples Headed For Good Harvest This Year

Most grapes in Michigan are off the vine already, but growers are in the midst of harvesting apples and cranberries.

With no spring frost and a warm summer growers are expecting pretty good crops this year.

Mark Longstroth is a small fruit extension educator with Michigan State University. He said the cool wet fall might be a problem for grapes

“We might have some disease problems later in the harvest if it stays wet but if it warms back up and drys off they should be able to get a good, high quality harvest.”

Longstroth said even with the possibility of disease and the hot summer leading to smaller apples, overall the harvest should be good.

That could mean lots of good wine out of Michigan this year, but Longstroth said it’s too early to say for sure.
