Local Shelters running adoption specials ahead of 'kitten season'

Area animal shelters are dealing with a large number of cats this winter. They’re trying to adopt the animals out before the spring ‘kitten season’ arrives.

Cat reproduction cycles mean in early spring shelters get a influx of pregnant cats and kittens. This year, most shelters in the area are already at or near capacity with cats. So a lot of shelters are running specials to try to adopt out them before new ones come in.

Janet Graham is the executive director and volunteer coordinator at the Humane Society of Elkhart County.

“Every other rescue, every shelter sees the same thing. You know, everyone’s so full right now and everyone has the same fear of what we’re gonna do when kittens start in another month or so.”

The Humane Society of St. Joseph County had a successful adoption event last month but they still have 200 cats in the shelter. Elkhart’s Humane Society is running an adoption event this weekend to try find homes for some of their 200-plus cats.

The Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County will have an adoption event in March. Their executive director says she’s also working on a grant request to be able to offer free spay and neuter to low income people’s pets.

Graham said that’s the big fix to this problem. “Spay and neuter. Spay and neuter. Spay and neuter.” She said cats in heat should not be put outside, that's how many animals end up pregnant.
