Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County broke ground today on the construction of four new houses in South Bend ahead of the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project.

The four homes will be built on a plot of land known as the Shetterley Triangle, which is bounded by California, Woodward and De Maude avenues in the Near Northwest Neighborhood.

Jim Williams is the president and CEO of St. Joe Habitat. He said the two story homes will be the most energy efficient homes habitat has ever built.

“We really want to see the long term impact, positive impact on our community,” Williams said, “And one thing that the Carter Work Project does, it brings awareness to the need for affordable housing.

The majority of the houses that will be built during the Carter Work Project will be in Mishawaka. About 30 homes will be built in St. Joseph County.

Information on available homes and applications for anyone interested in applying can be found on the St. Joe Habitat website, www.hfhsjc.org.
