Man Sentenced In St. Joseph County For December Crash That Killed Three In South Bend

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office has released the following sentencing information regarding Joel Barrozo, 30, who pleaded guilty to charges related to a December crash that killed a woman and two children:

St. Joseph County –Today Joel Barrozo, 30, was sentenced to 18 years in the Indiana
Department of Correction in connection with a three car fatal hit and run crash that
occurred on December 16, 2018, in the area of W. Lathrop and N. Bendix, South Bend.

This crash resulted in the deaths of Marvi Thomas, 47, Christopher Poe, 9, and Isabelle
Jasper, 22 months and serious injury to two others.

Mr. Barrozo pled guilty on July 2, 2019, to all ten counts with which he was charged,
without the benefit of a plea agreement. These charges included: Counts I, II, and III:
Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death, each a Level 5 Felony; Counts IV
and V: Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, each a Level
6 Felony; Counts VI, VII and VIII: Reckless Homicide, each a Level 6 Felony; and Counts
IX and X: Reckless Driving, each a Class A Misdemeanor.

The sentencing range for a Level 5 Felony is 1 to 6 years. The sentencing range for a Level
6 Felony is 1⁄2 year to 2 1⁄2 years. The sentencing range for a Class A Misdemeanor is up to
1 year.
 

Upon sentencing, some of the counts merged for an aggregate sentence of 18 years in the
Indiana Department of Correction for 3 felonies and 3 misdemeanors.
