Notre Dame Hosts Foley Workshop For Kids

Annacaroline Caruso

Kids attended a workshop at Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts center to learn how to make movie sounds, something also known as Foley.

The kids who attended the Foley workshop recreated the sounds from the opening scene of Back to the Future.

They used tools like a ratchet and power drill to mimic the sound of cranking up the volume on an amp and moving a mechanical arm.

Kevin Krizmanich is the cinema production manager at Notre Dame and led the workshop. He said Foley is a way for people to get in touch with their artistic side.

“It’s kind of like you’re using everyday items as musical instruments. You’re using coordination, and timing, and you’re using your creative skills and I just think that in general, doing any kind of art is important for a young developing kid,” Krizmanich said.

This Workshop was just one part of the AndKids World Film Festival that continues through August 8th.

The festival also features international films and another Foley Workshop on Thursday.
