Leeper Park Re-Opens After Renovations

The city of South Bend cut the ribbon on the new Leeper Park playground on Monday.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg was in town this morning to help some fourth graders from Madison STEAM Academy cut the ribbon on the new playground. Buttigieg said now it’s up to the next generation.

“I know this is hard to imagine," Buttigieg told the kids. "But one day you might be bringing your kids here to play. And by the time one of you is mayor cutting the ribbon on other parks around the city you’ll be able to talk about how you remember how special it was when the city came together to celebrate what we have in common.”

The ribbon is cut for Leeper Park in South Bend on Monday, October 7, 2019

Leeper Park is part of a larger project to overhaul or renovate more than 40 parks in the city.

The Leeper Park playground has been built to be fully accessible so children and caregivers of all abilities can play together. New accessible public restrooms have also been added on site.

The historic Studebaker Fountain in the park will be ceremonially lit Monday Evening for the first time. That event starts at 7. There are some more renovations coming to the paths and river overlook on the part of the park North of Madison School.
