Raku Fired Clay for Experienced Potters with instructor Len Cockman

Raku Fired Pottery Workshop

Course Length: 8 studio sessions

Maximum of 5 students

Studio Space: This class is geared toward students who already have experience in a clay studio. Len Cockman will be able to coach you through refining hand-built and wheel thrown pieces. Students enrolled in this class are eligible to one additional open studio day per week. Studio hours are listed on the website and front door. Production of forms will take place during the first 4 weeks of this class.

Fees: $210 tuition plus $45 materials. Total $255 The supply fee includes one 25 lb. bag of Raku appropriate clay (half a box) and use of FireArts glazes. Glazes that will be used are for Raku decorative pottery and, primarily due to the firing techniques, are not kitchenware safe. Your work will be fired to various temperatures based on the specific glaze during the last four weeks of the class.

Covid 19 Consideration: There are currently no restrictions related to Covid-19.

Format: We will be working with wet clay for the first 4 classes. Classes 5 through 8 we will firing pottery based on the specific glazes. They are:

Wednesdays, March 19th, 26th, April 2nd, and April 9th: Students will use these four sessions to create work for the raku firings.

Wednesday, April 16th: Clear crackle with tape or glue resists.

Wednesday, April 23rd: Naked Raku Slip

Wednesday, April 30th : Horsehair and Feather Pottery

Wednesday, May 7th: Copper Matte and Copper Luster

A final showcase will be held on Dec. 13, 2025, at 2PM, to show what students have been working on throughout the semester. Instructed by Nelitze Guillarte. Grab your American flag and join us on 9/11 this year as we walk to commemorate and remember those we lost that day and our heroes. We will visit local fire stations on our walk to thank our local first responders. This is a walk unlike anything you've seen in this area.

Create useful, beautiful and functional works of art. This three-day workshop explores hand building and glazing techniques. Equipment, clay, glazes and firing will be provided.

Join us in the Miller Auditorium at Goshen Theater on September 12th, for our FREE MOVIE NIGHT showing of “National Treasure” at 7PM!

Historian and code-breaker Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) has been searching his whole life for a rumored treasure dating back to the creation of the United States. Joining an expedition led by fellow treasure hunter Ian Howe (Sean Bean), Gates finds an ice-locked Colonial ship in the Arctic Circle that contains a clue linking the treasure to the Declaration of Independence. But when Howe betrays him, Gates has to race to get to the document ahead of his so-called colleague.

This Saturday, take a step back in time. Visit Pears Mill, an 1857 water-powered mill. Located in Buchanan, Michigan’s downtown Historic District. The mill is adjacent to Buchanan Farmers Market. Pears Mill is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday through Labor Day. There is no charge.

In partnership with the Kalamazoo Nature Center, the Connecting Chords Music Festival will be presenting live music from area artists stationed around the Nature Center.

This event is FREE (donations accepted on-site), and music will be playing from 2:00 – 4:00 PM… feel free to come anytime!

Join us on September 14th for an architectural walking tour of five iconic church buildings in downtown Plymouth. Learn bits of history paired with the unique features of each building. Enjoy the stained-glass windows from the inside and bask in the sacred spaces.
Churches to be included are the First United Church of Christ, Grace Community Christian Church, St. Michael Catholic Church, First United Methodist Church and St. Thomas Episcopal Church. All are located within a three-block walking distance. The tour will start at the First United Church of Christ at 2:30 pm.
Tickets are $10 each and available at the Museum, 123 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Tickets may also be purchased the day of the tour on-site. Museum hours are 10:00 until 4:00, Tuesday through Saturday. For questions, call 574-936-2306. Proceeds raised support MCHS community programs and technology. Please be aware that some stairs are included on the tour.
