Benton Harbor Area Schools chose Dr. Andrae Townsel as it's new superintendent Monday night

The two final candidates, Townsel and interim superintendent Patricia Robinson spent all day Monday meeting with students, teachers, administrators and community members.

Part of the superintendent search was funded by the state. Benton Harbor Area Schools, community members and state officials are part of an advisory committee that is tasked with finding solutions to lower the district’s debts and creating better academic outcomes for students.

The last superintendent for the district was appointed by the state and left the job after one school year. Townsel says he wants to connect with the greater community and work together to turn the district around.

Townsel is currently the assistant superintendent at Wayne-Westland Community Schools in Southeast Michigan.

Board President Joseph Taylor said they hope to have Townsel start before the first board meeting of the new year on January 7th.
