UPDATE: Beware Beach Hazards On Lake Michigan & Man Pulled From Lake Dies

UPDATE:

Weekend storms have turned into strong northerly winds. Which means dangerous conditions on Lake Michigan.

Beaches from Muskegon County in Michigan, all the way down through Indiana and Illinois, up to Milwaukee County in Wisconsin are under Beach Hazard Warnings. There is also a small craft warning in the same areas.

Many of the beaches under warnings do not have lifeguards. Those choosing to get in the water do so at their own risk.

Mark Frazier is a Meteorologist with the National Weather Service. He says in addition to high waves there are also rip currents.

“We also have the dangers of rip currents were very strong today. So we advise people to stay away from structures that go out into the water because that creates even more hazardous swimming conditions,” Frazier says.

Frazier says the best course of action is to just stay out of the water.

Officials recommend that those who do choose to go in the water know how to spot and escape rip currents, and that they wear a life jacket.
