UPDATE: Inmate Who Died At St. Joseph County Jail In South Bend Is Identified

Indiana State Police have released new information on the inmate death at the St. Joseph County Jail.

The inmate, Jason Peters, 37 South Bend, IN, was found unresponsive in the medical isolation unit at approximately 8:40 a.m. Jail staff and medical staff immediately began life-saving efforts until emergency medical technicians arrived. Peters was pronounced deceased at approximately 9:09 a.m. Peters was in the cell alone.

An autopsy, to include toxicology, will be performed on Peters in Ft. Wayne, IN on September 3, 2020.

Today St. Joseph Co. Sheriff's officials are announcing the death of an inmate at the county jail. The inmate who died has not been named, nor has a manner of death been disclosed.

South Bend, IN – September 2, 2020 – At 8:40 a.m. this morning an inmate was discovered unresponsive in the medical isolation unit of the St. Joseph County Jail. 

Jail medical personnel and staff immediately began life-saving efforts and called emergency medical technicians to the jail. EMTs arrived at 8:57 a.m and the inmate was pronounced deceased by emergency responders at 9:09 a.m. 

The inmate was arrested and booked into the jail earlier this morning. Indiana State Police were called and are investigating the inmate’s death. All additional information and further updates will be released by the Indiana State Police.
