Karl Smith


Host of J:Cubed Jazz to the 3rd Power: Cool, Smooth and Hot

Karl Smith joined WVPE in August 2014 as a staff announcer.  As a long time listener to public radio, Karl is committed to the purpose and mission of public radio. 


Born and raised in South Bend, Karl has been active in music since his time at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he had the opportunity to study jazz improvisation and composition. He later worked as a professional musician touring Canada and also spent many years in the record industry recording in Chicago, Detroit and Quebec. 


Karl is currently pursuing his passion for songwriting and jazz piano, performing with the “Ikeda Kings Jazz Band” in Chicago, “Whole Tone Jazz Combo” and occasionally performing at the “Open Jazz Session” at Merrimans’ Playhouse on Mishawaka Ave. in South Bend.


Karl is a graduate of IUSB and lives with his wife in South Bend.

On Monday, March 15th hear the backstory of Latin rock band Lalo Cura, singer-songwriter Anessa Sheikh and composer, bassist and educator Buddy Pearson.
