The Elkhart City Council unanimously approved allocating $5 million to expand and revitalize the Tolson Community Center at a meeting Monday night.

The city says the plan to revamp the Tolson Center is expected to cost $10 million.

The City Council took the first major step in moving forward with that project by appropriating $5 million from the general fund.

Dwight Fish is the council member for the 4th district, including the Tolson Center. He said this vote is the City’s way of investing in the community.

Fish said the other five million will come from fundraisers and donations.

The council still needs to vote on an ordinance that would approve an additional $700,000 to maintain the center for the next decade.
