Some Issues With New Voting Machines Reported In St. Joseph County

Several voters across St. Joseph County reported technical problems as they tried to cast their vote in the municipal elections.

This is the first year the County is using these new voting machines.

Some voters were also just confused or unhappy about how the new equipment works.

Riely O’Connor voted at South Bend Fire Station 2. He says he’s not a fan of the new technology.

“It seemed to be a little high labor, lots of people to help. Both myself
and the helpers seemed to be having a struggle,” O'Connor said.

O’Connor also says his machine jammed and needed to be reprogrammed
by a helper.

Catherine Fanello is the chairman of the County’s election board. She says the new voting machines were necessary because the old ones were breaking down.

“Our prior machines were approximately 12 to 14 years old and had reached pretty much the end of their life,” Fanello said.

Fanello says most of the issues are manageable.
